Cult Reviews- Heathers

Brent Comley, Staff Writer

Michael Lehmann’s 1988 teen drama/ dark comedy film Heather’s portrays four teenage girls, three of which are named Heather, in a clique in high school. Veronica, played by Winona Ryder, is in the most popular clique at her high school, but disapproves of the other girls’ cruel behavior. Veronica eventually meets the rebellious J.D. and they confront the clique’s leader, accidentally poisoning her. Soon Veronica realizes that J.D. is killing off the students that he dislikes and she races to stop J.D. “Heathers”.

It is a disturbingly dark comedy dripping with hyperbolic satire about high school life. Every character is exaggerated, as the kids are either sadistic or secretly psychotic or both. Although the film is a bit outdated, the truths explored are universal, and still relevant. We rate ”Heathers” 8.5 out of 10.
