LEXINGTON, KY: A house covered in Christmas lights awaits the holiday season.

For most people, decorating your house is a principle when it comes to the holidays. Decorating has much value, but the right time to decorate is an underlying topic. The best time to decorate for Christmas is the week before Thanksgiving, it allows more time for nostalgia, to appear friendly and sociable to neighbors, and to enjoy the Christmas time. It also limits the amount of stress that comes with decorating for the holidays. Decorating the week before Thanksgiving is truly the best time to decorate for the holidays.

One of the many reasons why people should decorate the week before Thanksgiving is because it allows more time for Christmas nostalgia. According to Steve McKeowen, “People like to associate things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of…childhood.” A part of the happiness sparked when you put up Christmas decorations comes from childhood memories and feelings.
Mrs. Presley, a Christmas enthusiast, enjoys fond memories of putting up her family’s Christmas tree as well as setting up the nativity scene. When you decorate before Thanksgiving, you have more time to relive memories which leads to happiness and joy.

Another reason why you should put up Christmas lights early is that it can make you appear to be more sociable and friendly. The Journal of Environmental Psychology reported on research where people were shown photos of houses and were told to rate the residents of each home. The houses adorned with Christmas decorations were seen as more friendly and sociable, versus houses without decor. The houses seemed more “welcoming” regardless of whether the people actually interacted much with their neighbors. It promotes a sense of community. The longer you have your Christmas decorations up, the more time you have to leave a positive impression on your neighbors and community.
Who wouldn’t want to enjoy holiday decorations for as long as you can?

The longer you have your Christmas decorations up, the more time you, as well as others, can spend admiring them. There is more time to create memories by making cookies, sitting around a fire, watching Christmas movies, and listening to Christmas music. For many people, the Christmas season is about joy and happiness, the feelings associated with Christmastime are positive and happy, and the longer you can enjoy it, the better off you’ll be. Who wouldn’t want to make that time last longer? At some times, Christmas decorating can be stressful and cause a lot of work. When you put up your decorations before Thanksgiving, that not only sets a deadline for the decoration to be done by Thanksgiving, but it also allows you to relax on Thanksgiving once the decorating is done.Mrs. Presley says her family “Usually decorates for Christmas the week before Thanksgiving.” It gives her family a little more time as opposed to waiting until after Thanksgiving. By decorating the week before Thanksgiving, you can eliminate one thing off your to-do list.

One downfall that comes with decorating the week before Thanksgiving is that the Christmas decorations can take away from Thanksgiving and the meaning behind it. But, it is not impossible to enjoy and appreciate two holidays at the same time. There are too many positives that outweigh the negatives. The best option for Christmas decorating is before Thanksgiving, though the truth is, there is no right or wrong time to put up your holiday decorations. Do what makes you happy and brings you joy.
