Thor Ragnarok Review

Marvel’s Third Thor Film is a Fantastic Science Fiction Adventure Film

Jack Dillender, Editor-in-Chief

Thor Ragnarok is the 17th Movie in the Marvel Film franchise. We’re in a golden age of comic book movies and this is one of the best of them. The first 2 Thor movies were sub par at best for the franchise which includes heavy hitters like the Avengers, Iron Man, and Spider-man, but Ragnarok was different. It took a page from Guardians of the Galaxy and had a team come together for a film of great fun.

We start with Thor on an adventure to kill Surtur, the Norse villain that is prophesied to bring Ragnarok and destroy Asgard, Thor’s home. Thor vanquishes him in a wonderfully directed fight with Led Zeppelin blaring in the background. He then returns home to find something is wrong in Asgard. He is joined by a Marvel all-star cast with Hulk, Loki, and Valkyrie in order to keep peace in the 9 realms.

If you’ve seen either of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, you know they they are full of witty humor. This is both a great part of this movie and it kind of drags it down. The fantastic Taika Waititi directed this movie and his humor is very prevalent in the movie. However it’s only draw back is that it takes away from one very deep and emotional scene that should have been very moving but instead is blown off.

Despite that, this movie is yet another major win for marvel. We get proper character development for Thor, Loki, and especially the Hulk, who is getting a three part character arch in his next three Marvel appearances. The villain, Hela, was also a well worked rendition of the classic comic villain, with proper motives and feelings. She helps raise the stakes and provide a solid conflict to the story.

Thor Ragnarok is not only a great Marvel movie, it’s a solid science fiction road trip. The proper use of comedy and action in this movie add to the fantastic universe that has been building into the Infinity War. Overall, 8/10.
