Girl’s lacrosse is a spring sport but has practice and conditioning in the fall. Practices are coached by Ms.Mickleson, commonly known as a part of the pre-engineering program she also teaches algebra and geometry. The starting date for fall ball, which is practice during the off-season, is October 9 and ends December 7. There are two practices a week on Mondays and Thursdays on the front lawn from 3:45 to 5:15 for an hour and 30 minutes. The practices are split into two parts, one half being conditioning to help players get in shape for the season and the second half focusing on individual stick skills. No experience is needed to play lacrosse; most players join with no experience. You can email the girl’s lacrosse coach, [email protected], to ask her to add you to the 2023-2024 lacrosse Canvas page. If you have any questions, you can also visit her classroom, Room 124.

On the Canvas page, there are two things you need to turn in: your KHSAA Sports Physical and your US Lacrosse Membership, which has to be valid through May 2024. However, Canvas is not the primary source of communication; there are two other apps. TeamSnap is one of the apps they use, which includes everyone along with Coach Mickelson; the other app is a group chat just for the players.

It is okay if you are scared about not knowing much about lacrosse because most people start playing in high school. There is absolutely no judgment from anyone whatsoever. To play, you will need the following equipment: girls lacrosse stick, goggles, mouthguard, cleats, running shoes, and water. If this is your first time playing lacrosse and you are unsure if you want to play, you can borrow a stick and goggles. You would need to ask the coach or returning players. However, they can not provide a mouthguard and shoes. If you do not want to buy cleats, running shoes are fine for fall ball, but cleats are needed for the season.

It is okay if you are busy or play another sport during fall ball and must miss some practices because fall ball is a low commitment. However, in-season is different; lacrosse should be your top extracurricular from February 15 to May 15. Tryouts are February 15, and there will be around 40 players accepted enough for junior varsity and varsity. They will accept players based on lacrosse skills, commitment, athletic conditioning, and academic eligibility. You need to pass six classes and have no office discipline referrals.

If you are worried about your first game, an upcoming 7v7 tournament on October 14 at Dunbar starts at 8 p.m. It is a scrimmage, no pressure, and great for experience in a game setting. There are some club fall ball opportunities that are outside of school. You need 3+ years of experience, three practices, and two tournaments for the Big Blue Lacrosse Club. Then, there are Bandits, a company that coaches lacrosse, and they have a 7v7 league on October 15 and November 5. They have two tournaments, October 28-29 and November 17-19.

As a previous player, I would 100% recommend joining. Sophomore Ashlynn Jones recently joined lacrosse and said, “It was very fun, especially since I already knew a bunch of people doing it. I also met new people who were all nice and understanding that I just started learning lacrosse.”Fall ball and girls’ lacrosse is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills.
