High school is nothing like the movies, where the halls are clear. Many students think the halls will be wider since it’s high school. In reality, they are not. There is so much going on that it is harder to walk in the halls. Students are standing and talking to their friends, while others are trying to get to class, causing them to push and shove. Lafayette hallways can be intense for many during class changes due to the narrow hallways and the many stairs.
Lafayette is one of the oldest schools in Lexington, built-in 1939. With a population of 2,432 students and 177 teachers, Lafayette seems more compact but is harder to navigate.
Lafayette hallways are crowded with students and teachers trying to get from place to place, especially the halls going to the science and social studies department. The jumble can cause students to be late, leading to upset students. They are getting marked tardy when they try to be on time but can’t help it. Getting around the school is challenging because of the narrow and compact hallways.
Lafayette has made a new change by giving students six minutes to get to their next class instead of the original time, which was five minutes. Though many students think that is a lot of time, it goes so fast because many students take advantage of it to talk with their friends or use the bathroom. It makes it difficult for students to get around because they just stand and block the way. Teachers get frustrated when students are late due to the halls because it takes up teaching time to wait for those students and have to re-explain to them.
Interviewing students and teachers, many of them had the same thoughts about the halls. The Times polled 39 students and six teachers and asked their opinions on the hallway condition. All agree that the halls are very crowded. One administrator was also polled and said that the halls are crowded and that it is hard to get through areas. One of the areas that gets crowded is the halls close to downstairs, where students go to the bus foyer when they are either going to lunch or class. This happens because many students are just standing with their friends, not realizing that other students are trying to get to their classes.
In conclusion, Lafayette High School has very crowded halls. The only thing that can fix this problem is for students to go to their classes and not stop to talk to their friends. They can also not push their way to their class. Students are also not staying on the side they are supposed to stay on depending on their directions, which causes traffic jams. If everyone tries to work together the halls will be easier to walk through.
