Fashion can help students gain confidence and feel more comfortable in their skin. We asked a group of students at Lafayette High School what they wore, why they chose it, who inspired their style, and where they typically buy their clothes.
Students at Lafayette view fashion in different ways. Some view it as a way to express themselves and others see it as simply a way to stay comfortable during school.
Emery Luckett is a sophomore at Lafayette and plays for the JV girl’s volleyball team. Her favorite clothing pieces right now are her Adidas Gazelles and her jeans. She gets most of her clothing from stores like Brandy Melville, Pacsun, Hollister, and American Eagle. Luckett loves to express her interests through what she wears and told The Times she gets her inspiration from Emma Chamberlin, who gained her fame on YouTube in 2016 and has more than 12 million subscribers on YouTube and 15.1 million followers on Instagram as of September 26, 2024.
The Times also interviewed Lucia Frakes, another sophomore at Lafayette. She is a lacrosse player who enjoys fashion and stays on top of trends. During an interview on September 16, 2024, she gave The Times a brief description of what she was wearing. She had on an Old Navy sweater and Old Navy jeans, underneath she had on a top from Macy’s. Lastly, she had on a pair of Adidas Sambas. She says that she typically buys her clothes from Macy’s and she also enjoys thrifting at Goodwill. Lucia loves to stay on trend and be innovative with her style. She gets her inspiration from influencer Carla Rockmore, a fashion stylist and jewelry designer based in Texas, whose style can be described as classic with fun oversized pieces.
Anna Gordon, a freshman at Lafayette, was also interviewed by The Times on September 16, 2024. She expressed that “I am inspired by my comfort.” She finds her clothing at places like Nike and Aerie. She also loves shopping at Lululemon, where her favorite piece of clothing is her Lululemon Scuba, a popular cropped zip-up that comes in a variety of colors.
Lastly, we interviewed Sherri McPherson, an English teacher at Lafayette High School. She said she would describe her style as “Comfortable teacher chic.” On September 16, 2024, she wore an Amazon blouse, Kohl’s cargo capri pants, Shoe Carnival sandals, and a Stitch Fix necklace. She told The Times, “My style is more practical, a little more traditional dressy.” This can be seen in her wearing affordable pieces that are timeless and very practical for teaching. She also told us that the shoes are the most important part of her outfit. She values high-quality, comfortable shoes. Amazon and other online stores are her favorite places to buy her clothes. She also has a Stitch Fix subscription which delivers new styles from a personal stylist.
