The Lafayette Girls Volleyball team wrapped up their season on October 17th, playing against the Bryan Station Defenders and winning 3-1. This year, they had an amazing season, going 25-11 in wins-losses. They held their senior night on Wednesday, October 16th, playing against Danville High School, winning the varsity game 3-0. They celebrated our seniors, Callie Duane, Grace Gossett, Brooklyn Rudzik, Emma Pittman, Emma Sorensen, Madelyn Blakey, Taylor Shearer, Elena Butler, and Ella Mooney.
This season has been great for a lot of the Generals. Sophomore Audrey Gossett did amazing with a total of 388 kills, 24 blocks, and 151 digs. And we can’t forget about freshman Lily Grant who came in late to the team and still put up 74 kills and 44 blocks.
One of the most notable games our Generals had this season was the Lexington Catholic game on October 9. The Knights are ranked #9 in the state of Kentucky while the Generals are ranked #23. The team agrees that this was one of the most fun games that they have played this season. They took Lexington Catholic to 5 sets, losing (2-3) but having a good time all throughout the whole time. Audrey Gossett got her personal record of 27 kills in a game while playing.
The Times interviewed senior libero Emma Sorensen, asking what her favorite part of this season was. “The [Lexington] Catholic game, the pre-game talk, and the post-game talk. We were all super hype, and it felt like the most of a team that we had been all season.” Sorensen is committed to playing volleyball at Samford University after she graduates high school.
When asked Junior Varsity player Mia Mates what her favorite game of the season was and why, she told The Times, “The Dunbar game was my favorite game because of the high-level competition played and the energy our team had during the game.”
The Times also interviewed senior Defensive Specialist Emma Pittman, asking what she will miss most about the team. She said, “I will miss the bonds I made over the years. These friendships and memories are something I couldn’t live without. I truly will miss everything about Lafayette Volleyball as a program.” Pittman has served as team captain through her last season playing.
The Lafayette volleyball team has changed a lot this year. From changing positions to making a new lineup and pulling players up, the Generals have stayed in the game and been ready for anything. This year was the first year with our new head coach, Taylor La Mantia, and she has definitely made her mark on the team. We wish our seniors good luck in their future pathways and wherever the wind takes them! Once a general, always a general.
