School is known to be a leading cause of stress or anxiety in students worldwide. Every day, students learn new information and have to retain it. Sometimes, students learn something new and just don’t understand it and need help to comprehend the information. Sometimes, they just need time to work on their homework with help around if they need it. ESS or Extended School Services are perfect for anyone needing any extra help after school hours.
ESS is a very helpful resource for students, whether they need help with homework assignments or a quiet place to get work done. Attending ESS can help with academic subjects like English, math, social studies, science, etc. If students need to catch up in any class, attending ESS would be a great way to tackle assignments or to get help when studying for a big test.
ESS is after school from 3:30 to 4:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Mondays, English teacher Mr. Ledbetter, English Language Learner (ELL) teacher Mr Mitsumori, special education teacher Ms. Cornette, and social studies teacher Ms. Williams teach. They help students with English, ELL, Learning Strategies, and social studies. On Wednesdays, Mr. Mitsumori helps students with ELL again and there is also math with Mr. Merrick. On Thursdays, Mr. Matson helps students with chemistry and Ms. Regnier helps with biology and physics. Whatever academic help students may need is available to improve their understanding of these subjects.
Annemarie Dvorak is a freshman at Lafayette High School. She told The Times, “ESS has helped me get class work done without distractions.” Dvorak also recommended ESS for others, “If you need a quiet place to do your work, even if you don’t have missing assignments, ESS is a good place to go also if you want help with your work.”
Mr. Merrick is a math teacher at Lafayette and helps out with the math portion of ESS. He told The Times, “ESS is the best place for students to get help with their homework without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed. They can learn from their peers, the atmosphere is inviting and relaxed, and everyone is there to help.” He also talked about the wide range of help available from Algebra 1 up to AP Calculus BC.
With finals just around the corner, ESS could be a great way to study. It is an environment with minimal distractions and lots of help from teachers whenever it is needed. Finals can be a stressful time for students, and ESS can help minimize that stress and make students feel more prepared.
