Christmas is just around the corner, and gift-giving can be hard for some people. Gift-giving is not just a holiday tradition of getting things you want sitting in your Amazon cart. For many, it is deeper than that.
To some, gift-giving means getting regular household items that they might not be able to afford in the regular season. Gift-giving during the holiday season is a wonderful way to show your care and appreciation for the people around you.
The Times polled 50 students asking, “If you could only get one thing for Christmas, what would it be?” to discover what is popular this year. The results were diverse among students’ opinions.
The most popular category among students was clothes, with many stating they wanted to update their wardrobe and get new trendy outfits. When asked this question, 24% of students responded with some form of technology. Many students stated they wanted a new phone. 16% said cars, 16% said pets, 16% said shoes, 13% said clothes, 8% said games, 5% said money, and 2% said something miscellaneous.
The Times asked Lafayette junior Sophia Van Outer, from the miscellaneous category, to explain her thinking when asked what she wanted for Christmas, “I want blankets because they are comfortable, portable and they keep you warm when it’s cold. You can never have enough.” Many students’ responses consisted of having the value of something convenient, so even if you are not sure what to buy someone, something practical is always a good choice.
Even with differing opinions between students, gift-giving doesn’t need to be as hard as it may seem. Social media is always a good place to look for gift-giving ideas as many offer select categories specific to gender and age. For example, Amazon has gifts under $25 for kids, teens, and adults. Places like Target and Walmart are also great in-store options for your Christmas gift shopping, with affordable and high-quality selections. So, don’t stress about what to gift your loved ones this holiday season.
