The switch from a middle school curriculum to a high school curriculum can be very hard to interpret and adapt to, but it doesn’t have to be. After the first semester break, Lafayette counselors visit Jessie Clark to introduce Lafayette’s class options briefly.
To further understand and help with this change of schedules, Lafayette hosts a yearly 8th-grade Parent Night to inform parents and students what to expect. This year, the orientation will be hosted from 5:30-7:30 PM on January 21st, 2025, after Lafayette’s first semester break.
This orientation invites eighth graders and their parents to learn about classes provided at Lafayette, such as AP courses, dual-credit, art, and theatre classes, before they sign up for their first semester classes for high school. Representatives from both the Pre-Engineering and SCAPA programs are available as well. The orientation also allows parents to communicate with teachers about these courses to see what best fits their students. It can also help students better understand the courses that can be taken.
Incoming freshmen and their families are encouraged to attend 8th-grade night, as it showcases the many opportunities at Lafayette. The 8th grade night shows the classes provided at Lafayette and the clubs and sports that Lafayette has. There are tables for students to visit and learn about each one. They can ask questions at these tables if they have thoughts about joining said clubs or sports.
Students and families can walk around and explore the tables set up in the cafeteria. Later, after families see the different tables set up, parents can meet with counselors and principals. While the parents meet with counselors and principals, students can attend the home basketball game against Lexington Christian Academy.
Overall, the 8th Grade Parent Night is a great opportunity for both students and parents, as this gives an idea of what high school classes look like, what courses can be taken, what clubs and activities there are, and what their upcoming school looks like.
