DanceBlue is an annual event held at Lafayette that raises money for childhood cancer by charging students admission to attend a “mini-marathon.” UK students come and teach choreographed dances that students participate in at the beginning of every hour for six hours, unlike the UK DanceBlue, which is held for 24 hours straight. The event also features good food, games, and music. DanceBlue is a great place for students to interact with their friends, meet new people, and raise money for childhood cancer in a fun and uplifting environment.
Tickets are $25, and when students purchase their tickets, they get a shirt. Students are required to wear the shirt to DanceBlue because it represents their ticket purchase. Without the shirt, students will not be allowed in, and they miss out on the food, and endless amounts of fun.
Students can donate additional funds in the buckets that every teacher has in their classroom. The buckets alone, last year, contributed $4,000 to the total amount raised. Throughout the year, additional events are held that contribute to DanceBlue, like sports games, and different nights at restaurants. Last year DanceBlue raised over $46,000. The money raised is donated to the Kentucky Children’s Hospital Oncology and Hematology clinic.
This year’s DanceBlue will be held on February 22, from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. There will be food from many of Lafayette students’ favorite restaurants. Last year they had food from places such as Moe’s and frozen yogurt from Orange Leaf. They also have many different inflatables for students to use in between-the-line dances.
Alexis Baltimore, a senior at Lafayette, is a head council member, and she spends a lot of time working on events like DanceBlue. Her favorite part is revealing the incredible amount of money raised at the end of the night. “The sense of community coming together to support pediatric cancer…Students can expect the most fun night of their life, ” Baltimore told The Times. She also mentions how this year places like Moe’s, Cane’s, and Orange Leaf will be catered and come with the price of student tickets.
For students who are interested in DanceBlue and want to help this fantastic cause further, next school year, there is the opportunity to join the DanceBlue Committee on the student council. Baltimore also says “It’s a great way to get involved and meet new people.” This is another great way to meet new people and interact with the student body at Lafayette.
