Do you have any old books just sitting on your shelves? Well, now you have the opportunity to use them for good. Lafayette Book Club is hosting an event where you can drop off books to benefit kids at Russell Cave Elementary School. One of our librarians, Ms. Schoff said, “We’ve done churches and things and this year we chose Russel Cave because one of our students had a connection with them.”
They are donating books for the one service project they do each year and thought that this was a great way to help the community. So if you have any books suitable for elementary-aged students, gather them and use them to help students who need them more.
YouGov recently surveyed 29,000 Americans to ask them how many books they owned. They found that “over 90% of Americans own some books, though it may be only one, at least 69% of Americans own no more than 100 books (6% are unsure how many they own). Another 25% own at least 100 books, including 4% who own between 500 and 1,000 books, and 3% own more than 1,000.” This quote shows that many people have books in their household. So, maybe there are a few books we could part with for the good of an elementary school. So, how can we make this happen?
We interviewed one of our librarians Ms. Schoff said, “The book club likes to do a book drive for their one service project each year. And their choice for this year was to support Russell Cave. We did a thing with Dance Blue with one day’s notice-kind of a spur-of-the-moment type of thing- and we got 27 books so that was very good. So our goal is about 100 books and I’m pretty sure we will reach that.” This is one way the book club was working to make sure we had a good amount of books to give to the kids at Russell Cave.
This event will take place between February 3 and February 28. Bring as many books as possible and drop them off at the library. These books will be used for students from as young as three years old to ten years old. They will be distributed throughout the Russell Cave Elementary classrooms, ensuring that each class has easy access to new books. Doing this can help students get a better and more developed education in their elementary school years.
By bringing old or new books, you can make sure you’re spreading love and support during this winter season.
