No one has enough fingers or toes to count how many iconic pop culture moments there were in 2024. There is so much to recap from “Wicked” to Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
The movie adaptation of the magical Broadway musical “Wicked” was initially announced in 2012 but faced many delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the writer's strike. The movie finally finished filming in January 2024 and was released on November 22, 2024. Wicked became one of the most iconic pop culture moments, including viral press tour moments and Cynthia Erivo’s breathtaking “Defying Gravity” battle cry.
One of this year's most popular celebrity couples was singer/ songwriter Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The two met when Swift was touring, and Kelce attended a show at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Kelce had made a friendship bracelet with his number on it to give to Swift after she was done performing. Sadly, Kelce didn’t get to give her the bracelet. Thankfully, he had someone on Swift’s team connect them. Now, the couple has been together for over a year. Travis Kelce has supported Swift at 14 shows and even joined her on stage for a few. Swift has attended 22 Chiefs games, including Super Bowl LVIII (58) and Super Bowl LIX (59).
Perhaps the biggest breakthrough in the music industry was Sabrina Carpenter. Since the release of her album “Short n’ Sweet”, she has been on every music chart and even won her very first Grammy Award. Carpenter had a hard time becoming popular in the music industry. As a Disney child star in the show “Girl Meets World”, she struggled to get recognition. Once she released her hit single “Espresso”, she hit the mainstream. Now, she is on tour and even performed at the Grammys and MTV Music Video Awards (VMA).
On February 2, 2025, the Grammy Awards were televised, and there was a lot of drama. That night, the artist Beyonce won the Best Country Album and Album of the Year awards. This caused major controversy and many people took to the internet to express their opinion on her winning the award. People said that they did not think the album “COWBOY CARTER” was true country and that it should not have been in the Best Country Album category.
In 2024, a viral feud began when rap artist Kendrick Lamar dropped a diss track about another rap artist, Drake. Many videos circulated online explaining the beef between the Grammy award-winning rappers. Since then, Drake has been suing Universal Music Group (UMG) for defamation and harassment over the release of Lamar’s Grammy-winning song, “Not Like Us,” which accused him of inappropriate actions with minors.
So many more iconic music, movies, internet, and world moments will never be forgotten. This year is sure to bring even more memorable moments.
