As Lafayette prepares for their seniors to leave, they welcome a new class of freshmen into Lafayette High School. As the new freshmen arrive, Lafayette hopes to make them as ready and comfortable as possible in a brand-new school. Lafayette hosts many events, such as open houses, freshmen meetings, orientation, and 8th grade night, so the incoming freshmen can expect lots of fun.
At the beginning of freshman year, counselors come into student’s English classes and show kids certain courses you have to take to graduate. It also talks about Elevate and the Elevate moments. It talks about how Elevate can help people record their moments and goals through high school. Elevate helps kids organize their things for their college application. It can record charity events they attended or clubs they joined. The meeting is very helpful to freshmen and shows them what they have to achieve.
An open house is usually held on the Monday before the beginning of the school year. It gives returning and incoming students time to figure out where their classes are, meet their teachers, and learn about the syllabus and what they may learn that year. Many teachers attend the open house and welcome students into their classrooms to meet them and get to know their students. Students may also meet counselors and teachers, and parents get to know their students' teachers and how the classroom is run. It is a great opportunity for students, parents, and teachers.
Orientation is one of the many other activities offered during the summer to help freshmen adapt to high school. They offer tours of Lafayette, sessions with teachers about graduation requirements, how to talk to teachers, and questions about Lafayette. All these tours are given by student council members, and the sessions are held by teachers around the school. It is held a couple of weeks before the start of school and lasts four days, with different groups of students every day.
During the current school year, Lafayette hosts an 8th-grade night where current 8th-graders come into Lafayette. Students get to look at clubs, and parents get meetings with counselors. Some teachers help with the event and 8th graders may even get to meet their teachers. Along with 8th grade night, Layette also has AP Night, which is not only for incoming students but also for returning students to look at the APs that are offered and the challenges and benefits of taking AP classes.
There are also meetings for 8th graders who may want to go into Pre-Engineering or School For Creating and Performing Arts. They also get to learn about the benefits and disadvantages of going into Pre-Engineering or SCAPA. They get to learn about the classes you need to take for Pre-Engineering and the requirements for SCAPA courses.
Incoming 8th graders have many chances to come into Lafayette, meet teachers, and maybe even make new friends at events like orientation and open house. Parents also have many chances to meet their child's teachers, classmates, and counselors. The students get tours of Lafayette, so when they arrive at school next year, they won’t be like a deer lost in the headlights.
