The annual book drive at Lafayette High School is back again this year. It gives students and staff the chance to help out and provide different types of books for people in need around the world It is being organized by The General Book Club, with Mrs. Schoff, one of the librarians at Lafayette, is the sponsor.
All donations will go to the International Book Project, a Lexington nonprofit that helps distribute books around the world to promote literacy and education. The event runs from Sept. 10 through Oct. 15, and all donated books will help others gain greater access to reading. This event gives the community a simple way to make a big difference by donating a book.
“The main goal is to give students more access to books,” Mrs. Schoff said. “Books can help students learn more about the world and open up new opportunities.” Mrs. Schoff explained that the drive will help students who might not always have the chance to visit the library, visit the library, giving them the opportunity to get a book in their hands.
Mrs Schoff explained that one of the main challenges during the drive is timing. “‘A lot of people wait until the very last minute to donate.” She also shared that books for younger readers are needed; different genres like fiction, Nonfiction, etc., are welcome. The General Book Club hopes this year's drive will bring in more books than ever collected and continue to grow in the future.
Students and staff can drop off any type of book in the library. Students donating can also earn community service hours for National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and other clubs, depending on the sponsor.
The Book Club is hoping to collect as many books as possible, whether they are old or new as long as they are in good condition. Every donation counts. The goal of this event isn't just to hit a certain number of books, but to make reading more accessible to everyone.
