On February 11, 2026, Lafayette Theatre’s The Music Man came to a close. However, this was meant to happen on February 1, 2026.
This is updated from the original schedule due to winter weather and is still subject to change. For more information on tickets and how they will be carried out with the schedule change, visit Lafayette Theatre’s website at http://www.lafayettetheatre.org/
Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” is set in rural Iowa in 1912, following traveling con artist Harold Hill as he poses as a children’s band director in the small town of River City, Iowa. Harold attempts to scam the townspeople into buying his band uniforms and instruments, and chaos ensues.
The cast, crew, and directors have been working tirelessly since October to bring this show to life and are so excited to share this story with you at the end of January. “The rehearsal process was slow, but also really fulfilling at the same time,” said costume crew member Izzy Brewer. Work began in October, soon after auditions. The cast learned songs, dances, and lines, and the tech crew worked on costumes, props, lighting, and set pieces inspired by the designs and ideas of the Advanced Technical Theatre classes.
After Winter Break, rehearsals got more intense leading up to the show. The cast ran through all of the scenes and songs, and the crew worked on finishing props, costumes, and more. The Sitzprobe, the first time that the cast sings with the pit orchestra, was on Jan. 16.
Then came Tech Week. Tech Week is the week before a production, where the show is rehearsed in full and lighting, props, costumes, and set are added. With the many snow days, the majority of tech week was cancelled, so students worked all day Saturday to open the show that night.
“It’s really hard at the beginning… but at the end everyone is happier when the shows actually do start,” said Brewer. Tech week is tiring and stressful, but an exciting and fulfilling experience in the end.
It’s finally time for performances. Tickets can be purchased on the Lafayette Theatre website or in person before a performance. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults. School show tickets for students can be purchased at lunch each day before the show, for $5.
“The tech people are awesome, the actors are also awesome, and we’ve done this for a few months, I think, so I feel like it’s really worth it to see,” said Brewer. Watching this show is not only an enjoyable experience for you, but it also supports young artists. So visit River City, Iowa, with us Jan. 31 – Feb. 3, 2026, and support the arts in your community.
