The Photography Club at Lafayette High School gives students a chance to build friendships while also having a time and space to be creative through photography. The club is sponsored by Travis Townsend, who teaches photography and drawing. The club meets every Thursday in room 208 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. It is open to all students, regardless of grade level or photography experience. Making the club an inclusive environment for students who want to try out new things.
One of the biggest benefits of joining the Photography Club is the access students have to professional equipment. Students can use Nikon digital cameras to take higher-quality photos, so they don’t have to rely solely on their phones.
Members also have access to different lenses, colored backdrops, tripods, lights, and classroom computers. The lenses allow students to capture different types of shots, from close-ups to wide-angle photos, as they please. Members can get tips and guidance from Mr. Townsend during the club meeting. Students can edit their photos using editing software like Photoshop or Lightroom. These programs allow students to adjust lighting, color, and other details to improve their images.
The Photography Club is a flexible and relaxed environment. According to Mr. Townsend, “Sometimes there will be a short presentation on a topic or technique. Sometimes students sign out a camera, take a walk with friends, and snap photos around campus. Other times, students hang out and talk about their favorite photos.” The variety of topics and activities allows students to explore photography in a way that works best for them, whether that means getting help from Mr Townsend or working independently.
Overall, the Photography Club provides students not only with cameras and equipment but also a supportive space where they can learn new skills, express themselves creatively, and make friends with others who share similar interests.
