February 21, 2019
Lafayette’s tennis season begins March 13, 2019, and runs until the end of May. The boys and girls teams both compete in over 20 matches, a regional tournament, and a state tournament. The boys team is currently being coached by Lafayette math teacher Mr. Griffith. The girls’ team is coached by Mr. Wilson.
The boys team had a successful 2018 season with 11th Region Quarter-finalists in boys doubles. Returning to the team this year is two times 11th Region Quarter-finalist Senior Luke Pellegrino, along with Caleb Johns, Josh Arnold, and Kohki Honda. Coach Griffith is excited to coach the team and hopes to build off of last year’s success.
The girls team has a promising outlook. Returning to the team this season is Michayla Gatsos and Helena Weiss. Both girls had a successful season last year, as they won the FCPS Girls Doubles City Championship. They went on to the Quarter-final round of the 11th Region Girls Doubles Tournament. Returning to the team this season are Seniors Sharlene Wang, Kaiqi Wang, and Anna Nakagaki. Along with these seniors, Fuka Nakagaki will also be returning to the team.
According to Coach Wilson, “The entire girls roster returns from a season ago, so I’m very excited to have veteran players returning to challenge each other! I expect to have a successful season from these young ladies!”
Practices are every day after school from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. The first boys’ match of the season is on Monday, March 18th against Western Hills. The first girls’ match is Tuesday, March 19th against Madison Southern.
