The General Pride Club, also known as the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), is a high school club where students of any gender or sexuality can join together. Lafayette’s GSA occurs every other Wednesday after school from 3:30 to 4:30 and discusses various issues and topics typically revolving around the LGBTQ+ community.
When you enter the room General Pride is hosted in, you are greeted with drinks, snacks, and a welcoming group of people. Some of these people include the presidents, Joey Hester and Eva Alcaraz-Monje, and teacher advisors Lauren Sherrow and Julie Bennington along with your fellow members.
The most recent meeting, on November 8th, started with a slide show by co-president Alcaraz-Monje about queer Icons. Once that was done, the other co-president Joey Hester began handing out blank puzzle pieces for the members to decorate with their identities. While decorating the puzzle pieces, the band Queen was playing with members singing, and chatting. Once finished, members gathered around and connected the puzzle pieces to represent the differences between everyone and how even with those differences we can all come together as a community. As quoted by Hester “Although we each have our individual personalities, interests, and identities we all come together and support each other to create one unified community.”
It is encouraged that members of GSA should go to other special club events such as the Equity Forum or other events similar to that.
Overall, General Pride is a welcoming club, especially for LGBTQ+ members where you can do activities, talk about current events within the community, and just have a good time. There are posters around the school telling you where General Pride is hosted and what day it will be, so if you plan on joining, you can know where to go for that day.
