With a new school year underway, Lafayette High School’s Student Council wastes no time making its presence known. The council launched new posts on its social media platforms, selected “Under the Sea” as the homecoming theme, and picked all the themes for Spirit Week.
The council held its first meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 6, and each of its six committees—Homecoming, Spirit, Teacher Appreciation, DanceBlue Philanthropy, and Fundraising—has met separately since then. All committees have more meetings planned.
The sponsors for Student Council are Ms. Schwab, a science teacher, Coach Peters, who teaches health and PE, and Mrs. Ford, who teaches social studies. There is also many people in the head council, they are the ones who run all the committee meetings. There are two presidents of head council Alexis Baltimore and Joleigh Buckingham and the vice president is Ella Durban. Each committee has two head council members, Except DanceBlue has three.
“Student Council is a very important part of Lafayette for me,” said Rosie Ziskind, a freshman and new council member. “It allows me to give back to my community while simultaneously having fun and interacting with my peers.”
The Student Council has already made a lot of progress. The Homecoming Committee has chosen its theme, and the Spirit Committee has announced all the themes for spirit week. There is pajama day, color wars, white lies, jersey day, and FTK Friday. The Spirit Committee has also organized the Powderpuff game. Seniors will play against freshmen, and juniors will play against sophomores. Student Council also has its Fall Festival coming up. All benefits will proceed to DanceBlue.
Student Council has many more meetings and plans for the school year. The council’s early efforts demonstrate its commitment to fostering school spirit and to serving the Lafayette High School’s community throughout the academic year.
