On March 7th, the Lafayette Boys' Lacrosse Team took on Cooper High School of Union, Kentucky. The Generals were led by junior Fisher Hale and senior Gus Ringenberger in an attempt to start out the season 1-0.
The Generals have been practicing hard since early February to have a winning lacrosse team. When practice is in session, the team focuses on footwork, body checks, and knowing how to run each play the right way. One drill the Generals run is the drill 4x40s, in which all players line up upon the 40-yard line and get set for the head coach Will Lathram to whistle. The players then proceed as soon as he blows the whistle to accelerate and run to the goaline of the football field and then go back to the 40-yard line. The team does this to strengthen their ability to run for long durations and to get faster.
Last Friday, the Generals had a battle against Cooper High School, with both teams having an offense masterclass that led to overtime where Captain Fisher Hale scored the game-winner. The game started with a goal by the General offense and then a quick possession change to Cooper. About a minute later, Cooper High School scored. At the end of the 4th quarter, it was tied 10 to 10. Both teams were heated and throwing dirty hits at one another until the Generals shut them out on defense in overtime. It's safe to say it was a close-fought victory from start to finish.
Another aspect of the game is the mental side. Before the game, the players created a playlist ranging from American rappers like Gunna to Brazilian metal bands of the likes of Sepultura. To get the team going before the game. When the team was asked, they said that it helps get them fired up.
The Times heard a speech from Coach Lathram at practice about focusing on the team. He said, “We just have to focus on what's going on here and in our house and to not worry about what kinda offense or defense Cooper has but to just lock in on ourselves.”
Overall, the team has had their head down, working through all the schematics to be the best of themselves and to try and bring a new edge of excitement to Lafayette lacrosse that the school has never seen. The game ended with a shot close to goal to win it in overtime.
