On Monday, March 24, 2025, the Lafayette Girls Lacrosse team traveled to play against the school ranked #14 in Kentucky, Frederick Douglass. The game started at 6:00 p.m. at Frederick Douglass High School.
The starting lineup consisted of attack and offense: Eera Kulshrestha, Sadie Meyer, Kailey Price, and Lyla Welch. The midfielders were Ashlynn Jones, Julia Finley, and Jill Gerding. The defense was Maya Denham, Layna Bush, Lily Aweimrin, and Emmaline Lynn. Finally, in the goal was Lily Wilson.
The Friday before this game, the team had lost against Woodford County 8-12 and was hoping to make a comeback. Coach Mickelson gave the team a few pep talks during and after the game. The Lafayette Times interviewed her about the game, “If we have the opportunity to play Woodford County again, I think our team will have to stop their scoring runs. I think we do this by maintaining possession of the ball and limiting our turnovers. “
The first quarter started with a draw of both teams to start the game: Finley taking the draw for Lafayette and Jones and Gerding on the circle. The team first came up with possession of the ball, which was Douglass. After being passed around a few times, they took a shot on Wilson and scored. Douglass won the second draw again, getting yet another goal.
Lafayette then prepared for a penalty shot that would be taken by Douglass after the third draw of the quarter, after a foul was called on Lafayette. Luckily, goalie Lily Wilson saved the shot, and Douglass gained possession. Until another shot by Douglass’s attack was again saved by Lily Wilson. Soon after the first goal for Lafayette was made by Junior Ashlynn Jones, now putting the score at Douglass with two points and Lafayette with one point, ending the first quarter.
The second quarter possession was won by Douglass again, but Lafayette quickly turned the ball over, taking it downfield for a penalty shot by #22 Georgia Earnhardt. However, Douglass’s goalie saved the shot, cleared it to the defense, and they took it downfield and shot on goal themselves. But Lily saved it again, and Lafayette took it back down; Julia got a ground ball and scored the second shot for Lafayette, tying the game 2-2.
After halftime and into the third quarter, Gerding took the draw, but Douglass gained possession of the ball again, took it to goal, and scored. After several goals from both teams, the close game continued. Dietzel and Earnhardt scored one after the other, bringing the end of the third quarter score to a tight 8-7, Douglass up.
By the game’s last quarter, both teams were exhausted and had been running to their limits, but the clock was still ticking and hope was still in the air with the score 11-12, Douglass up. The game was tense, starting off at a draw. Lafayette took possession, Ashlynn Jones had the ball at the 12-meter line on the field, attacker Lyla Welch down by the goal opened, assisting the goal, now tying up both teams. With only one minute left, the intensity was high; whoever scored the goal first determined the game’s ending. Douglas took possession and shot on goal off the draw but was saved by the goalie. Goalie Wilson cleared out to defender Lyna Bush, who made an upfield pass to Kailey Price, who drove in and made the last goal with 4 seconds left on the clock.
The Lafayette Times interviewed Kailey Price about how she felt about the game, “I think it was one of the best games we’ve come together so far and overall I think everyone did well in their position. We did have some set backs, but we still tried our hardest until the end and that’s what makes us a great team.” Price’s leadership as one of the team captains and contribution to the team was a huge component to this game.
After a hard-fought and emotional game, Lafayette came out on top, winning the game with a score of 13-12. The team cheered and surrounded goalie Lily Wilson and attacker Kailey Price, who scored the game-winning goal.
