A real-life horror story, Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is a real problem in the real world for students in schools, and can even be harmful for adults in their jobs. Teachers have mentioned how they are concerned every day about the use of AI on assignments. More students are turning to AI to complete schoolwork.
AI chatbots such as Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) and Snapchat AI are constantly completing schoolwork for the student body. It drains knowledge from students’ minds because they get all of the information from AI rather than learning the curriculum. Morgan Bowman, a freshman at Lafayette, believes that “AI has a negative impact on students.” Bowman says, “Students are losing their knowledge because of the use of AI and not learning anything in the actual classroom environment.” This shows that more people agree with the use of AI and with the negative effects it has on children in class.
New studies by The National Library of Medicine have proven that artificial intelligence is detrimental to students’ ability to work in the classroom and their comprehension skills. The article states, “For example, the strong bond between AI reliability and AI-generated content creates concerns regarding the quality of materials created by AI.” “This is important to the use of AI because it can cause further concerns on the knowledge of those with jobs that also use AI.
Teachers at Lafayette High School are extremely concerned about the use of AI. THey have proven this statement by explaining, “There is no AI in my classroom, and you are not allowed to do tests at home.” They have implemented rules and regulations, such as no AI in their classrooms, or not being allowed to do their tests at home due to the teachers’ lack of trust. Teachers implement these rules to ensure that nobody cheats on the tests or assignments to hopefully prevent students from taking the easy route on their assignments. Teachers have also warned students about potential consequences, such as failing if AI has been used on schoolwork.
MIT News states “that the rise of AI has also been extremely damaging to the environment, as it wastes valuable resources such as water and electricity. These resources are needed for the massive amount of datacenters, defined as “temperature-controlled building that houses computing infrastructure, such as servers, data storage drives, and network equipment.” From MIT News, protesting about generative AI programs, such as ChatGPT.
Artificial Intelligence has more harmful effects on students, like the loss of certain jobs. Many people around the world have lost their jobs due to the use of AI, and it’s just as harmful for adults as it is for children in the classroom. A Goldman Sachs study on Google says, “At least 300 million people have lost their jobs due to AI software.” Millions of people have lost their jobs —nurses, writers, pilots, etc. —because they are using Snapchat AI or ChatGPT to write tests, write their resumes, and they have no idea what to do when they have to do their jobs.
AI can also give wrong answers, misleading or false information, make up fake events to scam, and mix truth and fiction. This leads to loss of knowledge, and those same people who use AI will start to believe the misinformation given to them by AI, which creates a denser society. This creates a denser society because once people lose their jobs due to the misinformation given to them, they become homeless, and AI could replace humans with a functional robot who can complete the job for them.
Artificial Intelligence is extremely damaging to young scholars, adults, and the environment. Understanding the harmful impacts of AI is crucial in today’s society, where it is part of everyday life.
