New changes for Fayette county’s 2026-2027 school year have been brought up and talked about. The new change that has been brought forth is a new fixed block schedule.
This new block schedule would be set A and B days. Mondays and Wednesday would be set A days while Tuesday and Thursdays would be set A days and Fridays would change every week, instead of the normal A and B schedule where the days are switched each day.
This new change has sparked controversy within Fayette County with many students and faculty having strong opinions on the matter. Before coming to a decision at the board meeting, Lafayette sent out a survey to get student opinion on the pros and cons of the fixed block schedule. The Site-Based Decision Making Council voted to continue the traditional A-Day and B-Day alternating schedule. Though, after the feedback submitted by students, staff and parents the board concluded they needed more feedback, information and data to fully understand the potential impact of the Fixed Block Rotation schedule. The initial survey was released Dec. 4th but to obtain more information the survey was set to close Dec. 19th.
The Times interviewed Jill Gerding, a Junior at Lafayette, about what she thought on changing the schedule, she responded saying “I just don’t see the reason, I also don’t like having back to back days.” Which is a popular opinion for the students at Lafayette.
Not only would this change of schedule affect students but also teachers. Instead of having time between their A and B days, with the change of some back to back classes it would be hard for teachers to plan for their class time as it gives them less time to prepare and catch up with their other classes. The times interviewed Mrs Calk, an English teacher at Lafayette, her opinions on the fixed block schedule, she replied “I’d have to revamp everything” showing that it also affects teachers schedules.
Though there are different opinions, it’s important for students and teachers to voice their opinions on school changes such as a fixed block schedule.
