The Youth Service Center sponsors many clubs like Green Dot, G.I.R.L.S, LEGIT, and the YSC Teenboard to name a few. All the clubs are sponsored by Ms. Chastian.

Green Dot helps prevent bullying and trains students to help prevent potential negative situations. They make sure we all are green dots and not red dots. They meet spontaneous, they don’t really have a set time to meet. Kylie Willis who is a part of the Green Dot program said: ” It offers a great experience to make our school a safer environment”.

G.I.RL.S is a walk/run club and the students that are in this club help mentor participants with Picadome Elementary Girls on the Run program. Students will participate in 2 5k runs during the school year. The only requirements are a good attitude and tennis shoes.

LEGIT is a program for incoming 8th graders to be mentored by students  in LEGIT. They help 8th graders while they are visiting Lafayette on their Transition Day. This helps the 8th graders prepare for high school. LEGIT helps answer questions that incoming students may have and have activities the help them move out of their comfort zones. LEGIT mentors also deny any rumors that 8th graders may have heard before coming to Lafayette.

The YSC Teenboard will meet twice a month after school and occasionally for retreats on non-school days. The students may apply for an interview at the beginning of the school year and will start in late September.

The YSC Teenboard helps the community by having a weekend backpack program,  the students will fill up the backpacks with foods that they signed up for and hand them out. They put additional food in the backpacks that will help stretch the food out over winter break.

Kamille B. who is a part of the Youth Service Center said: ” The YSC helps the community with a lot of things, mostly it provides service and help to those who need it”.

They sponsor activities and programs for Lafayette High School. The YSC Teen-board participates in team building activities and leadership training. They learn how to be better at being leaders and learn how to work together without having little to no difficulty.

The YSC Teenboard is more like a leadership and diversity club. Everyone has different backgrounds and, in the club, they put them aside. Despite the club members differences they strive to get to know each other better. We all need to strive to get to know each other a little better and learn how to put our differences aside. They talk about different topics like prejudice and stereotypes. They also talk about how to reduce these things in our lives and how to be an example for others.

If you are interested in the Youth Service Center Teenboard you can get an application that is outside of the Youth Service Center, room 116. If you are interested in any of the other clubs you can go and talk to Ms. Chastian  in room 116 or contact her at [email protected].
