The Lafayette Swim Team is a group of students that compete in swim meets twice a month. The team has over forty members, which includes a mix of all grades at Lafayette and a few eighth graders that are willing to compete with Lafayette, even though they are still in middle school. As of now, the team is coached by Coach Witt.

The team practices three times a week on Sundays from 2 to 3 pm, Mondays from 7 to 8 pm, and Wednesdays from 8 to 9 pm. Due to Lafayette not having a pool, the swim team practices at the Highstreet YMCA. So far, the team has competed in three meets. The first meet was held at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on November 10th. According to Coach Witt, “The first meeting had a lot of teams and our swimmers swam well, but we did not place in the top three.”

At the second meet of the season, Lafayette lost against Scott County by one point. Coach Witt explained that Lafayette’s swimmers beat Scott County overall, but we did not have divers while they did and that brought Lafayette down with the scores. Even with the lack of divers, this was the closest meet Lafayette has had. Lafayette scored a total of 675.

In the past, KHSAA (Kentucky High School Athletic Association) required that all swimmers must participate in four meets in order to qualify for regionals. This year, that is not required but the Lafayette Swim Team requires that swimmers must participate in at least three meets in order to qualify for regionals.

The next swim meet will be on Wednesday, January 9th at Eastern Kentucky University.
