Cult Reviews- 28 Days Later

Brent Comley, Staff Writer

For this week’s cult classic we will be reviewing Danny Boyle’s 2002 Fantasy/Science fiction film, staring Cillian Murphy, 28 days later. A group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the “Rage” virus from a medical research lab, afterwards the apocalypse occurs. We are then introduced to Jim, the main character, who wakes up from a coma a month after, and he finds the city deserted. Eventually he stumbles upon a small group of survivors, and joins them to a military base which promises the “answer to infection.”

The film is low budget, who’s digital cameras and quick cuts produce a new level of grit and an almost documentary type feel. Besides bringing back the zombie genre, the film is an artistic interpretation of political allegories and is filed with tons of symbolism. The film is praised mostly for its climatic ending which focuses more on human nature and how are species is just as dangerous as the creatures it created. Some do criticize the films lack of realism which it replaces with more symbolic scenes, but then again we have to realize this is a zombie film so of course it won’t make total sense. Viewers going into the film shouldn’t go in expecting a horror film about immediate danger but instead a film that causes them to think about morality and human nature. For this review, we will rate it 8.6 out of 10.
