This past Friday, Lafayette took the field at Ishmael Stadium for their first home game on September 20, 2024, against West Jessamine High School. The final score was 28-7, with the Generals winning.
The game started with an early lead from the Lafayette Generals, who scored a touchdown in the first quarter, putting them ahead by seven points. By halftime, the Generals were still in the lead, but now by 22 points. In quarter three, Lafayette scored yet another touchdown, putting them ahead by 28 points, but the Colts managed to score a touchdown in the final quarter, leading to the final score of 28-7.
The Generals have had a tough few years with more losses than wins. In a pre-game interview, Head Coach Jon Lawson described the team as prepared for this win. “The team has actually had a great week of practice. They’ve been very focused and determined. They feel like they are very close to turning that corner as a team, so we are just celebrating all our mini successes and we’re using those to grow as a team.” The Generals certainly turned a corner with the Friday night win against the Colts.
When asked who the outstanding players are, Lawson answered, ”See, I’m the guy that’s gonna tell you my entire team. You gotta watch all of them because this is a team sport, and yet we’re gonna have some kids that stand out, but you never know when they’re gonna stand out.” Lawson emphasizes that you should watch the team play together, not just one player.
Coach Lawson also commented on how well the team is doing compared to last season. “This team has a different quality about them, a different personality, and I think that’s what it’s all about. They’re more disciplined. We have more knowledge. We have more football-based guys, and it’s showing on the field.” Friday’s win reflected the team’s hard work and dedication this season.
This game was great for the Generals and the people in the stands cheering them on, and we are excited to see how the rest of this season plays out. Stay tuned to the Lafayette Times for updates on the Generals v. Henry Clay home game on October 11, 2024.
